Reiki for CPD's Englewood District

Our second visit to Chicago Police Department’s 7th District was a big success. On a cold, rainy day in one of the country’s highest crime neighborhoods, this police station’s Community Room was an oasis of healing. We’d been here offering reiki in August of 2018, so a couple officers were returning for their second dose of reiki. For most it was a novel experience. As usual, newcomers walked in skeptical but curious, and most of them walked out much less tense, and scratching their heads about how that happened.

Favorite feedback: “I knew your hands were on my back, but I could feel you swirling all around my body. I was seeing a black wall and then all of a sudden, it was filled with… light.”

We applaud the CPD for their openness to new ways to help officers deal with day-to-day stress on the job. The more calm and centered officers are, the better able they are to make good decisions, de-escalate potentially violent situations and keep everyone safe.

Rebecca, owner of A Focused Touch wellness, worked on the first officer through the door. Later, after having a chance to think about what he’d experienced, he came back looking for her business card. Shana, a teacher at Chicago Public Schools, has been wanting to volunteer with the Reiki Brigade for a couple years now. This was her first event and she had a great time. Edit took time away from her Hungarian translating job and family to help share reiki with the greater community. Thanks, ladies!
